Vans "Off The Wall"

Vans is an American manufacturer of sneakers, BMX shoes, snowboarding boots, skateboard and other kinds of shoes mainly to young skateboarders / surfers / snowboarders. They also sell clothes and accessories for the same age group.

On March 16, 1966, at 704 East Broadway, Anaheim, California, brothers Paul and James VAN Doren, and Gordon Lee and Serge D'Elia's opened their first VANS shop with the name The Van Doren Rubber Company. The Van Doren Rubber Company was unique in that it manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. On that first morning, 12 customers purchased Vans deck shoes, which are now known as Authentic. The shoes which were made that day were ready for pick-up in the afternoon.

The company continued to grow into the 1970s. During this period they also produced wool lined canvas and rubber mukluks under contract to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force. Skateboarders who liked Vans rugged make-up and sticky sole were seen sporting Vans all over Southern California in the early 1970s. In 1975, the Vans #95, known today as the Era was designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. With a padded collar and different color combinations the Era became the shoe of choice for a generation of skateboarders. In 1979, Vans introduced the #44 shoe, and with the help of skateboarders and BMX riders the Vans Slip-On became all the rage in Southern California. By the end of the 1970s, Vans had 70 stores in California and sold through dealers both nationally and internationally.

What does “Off the Wall” mean?

Off the wall was a saying that the skaters back in the mid 70s used to say when riding pools. They were coming Off The Wall! So Vans' first official skateboarding shoe was on March 18th 1976 and had the Off the Wall newly created logo on it.

Since then, all vulcanized skateshoes carried the red and white logo on the heel of our shoe. The skaters were allowed to customize their shoes in any color. We then put the Off the Wall Logo on all the crazy wild colored shoes as they were developed (such as the slip ons) and eventually the checkerboard shoes that came after Fast Times at Ridgemont High came out in 1982. Vans was a little bit different and edgy and Off the Wall stuck as a corporate logo.

Ved slutten av 1970-tallet, hadde Vans 70 butikker i California og selges gjennom forhandlere både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

Hva betyr "Off the Wall"?

Off the Wall eller "Ned av Veggen" var et uttrykk som skatere tilbake på midten av 70-tallet pleide å bruke når man kjører i bassenger. De kom Ned av Veggen! Den første offisielle Vans' skateboarding sko kom 18. mars 1976 og hadde "Off the Wall" sin nyopprettede logo. Siden da har alle vulkanisert skateskoene deres båret den røde og hvite logoen på hælen. Skatere fikk dessuten lov til å tilpasse sine sko i alle regnbuens farger. Etter dette ble "Off the Wall" logoen satt på alle sprø, crazy og vilt fargede sko etter hvert som de ble produsert (for eksempel slip ons). Til slutt, etter Fast Times at Ridgemont High, kom de meget kjente sjakkbrettmønstrede skoene. Vans var litt annerledes og edgy, og "Off the Wall" ble fast deres firmalogo.
